Ease Back into It!

I know the we are all excited on day 1 of our new diet, healthy lifestyle, or whatever you’d like to call it! We can’t wait to eat right and workout as hard as possible. Before you do however, let me tell you this story.

A good buddy of mine(let’s call him Jim) went back to the gym for the first time after a few years away from exercises. In his prime, Jim was a powerful man who was the defensive tackle for his high school football team. Excuse me, his State Champion high school football team as a matter of fact. He was the guy you would envy at the gym as he is lifting the entire rack on the bench press machine almost effortlessly.

But several years removed, Jim was an auto mechanic who was a moderately successful young man who spent the majority of his time at work and had little time for exercise. I went to the gym with him for the first time in years and he was excited to get back into his old element. He loaded the machines as he was used to and despite struggling, was able go put the same weight he was used to . I gave him a pat on the pack to celebrate. It seemed like Jim didn’t miss a step.

The next day however, he had to stay home from work. He was unable to lift his arms and could barely get out of bed. He was too embarrassed to admit it at the time so he told us a story of an engine that fell at work that he caught before it hit the ground. Jim was in pain for a couple of days, but luckily, he was just fine after that.

So remember, imperative that you ease in to your return to exercising. Your body needs to get acclimated to the new routine and will literally shut down if you push it too far. You’ve got this!

The following are a couple of great questions for you to think about. Who is running your life? Is it your decisions or is it outside influences steering your direction?

Have you come up with your answers? Are you sure?

Life is complicated, and can be even more complicated based on your decisions. When you have adult responsibilities(mortgage, kids, utility payments, etc.), there is a new standard of living that plays a major factor in your options. So what do you want with your life?

If your goal is the move up the company ladder, than keep doing what you’re doing. Keep up the hard work and focus on what is important. You’ll be taking the next step in no time.

But what if your passion is to do something completely different than your day job? Then you need to put in the work to achieve your goals and dreams. Spending 9 hours at your job and then 15 minutes on your dream are not going to get you there. You will just continue to be burned out and frustrated.

Give 100% to what is important and don’t slow down to listen to the critical. It’s time for you to take the wheel and drive towards your passion.

  1. Thank you. I needed that. I am training for a 5 K in April. I am going to be 57, I am overweight, I have never fun before and I have been a couch potato for most of my life. I have been running for 30 minutes a day, three days a week (for three weeks) but I can barely run for one minute, walk for two, run for one… I met another woman in her fifties who is using my โ€œFrom couch potato to running planโ€ and she can run for twenty five minutes! I totally feel like giving up. This is the second blog that I read this morning that has been a great encouragement to me. Thank you.
